Marco Luka is no longer interested in keeping his emotions confined to quiet songs. The Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and producer embraces movement, experimentation and the liberating possibilities of dance music on his debut solo album, f_unk, released October 23 through Arista Records.

Across eight tracks, the Durham, North Carolina, native combines new wave, dark synth-pop and Prince-inspired funk with introspective songwriting, creating a record that finds its emotional release through rhythm. The project represents a significant stylistic departure from the intimate arrangements of his 2025 EP, INSOMNIA.

Despite its title, f_unk is not a conventional funk album. Luka draws inspiration from the genre's emphasis on movement, freedom and physical expression while incorporating psychedelic sensibilities and contemporary alternative pop production.

The album's centerpiece, 'INTO THE BLUE,' captures that philosophy through a celebration of uncertainty and the possibilities that accompany embracing unfamiliar experiences. The song arrives alongside an official music video.

'Life is special and too short. We should live every moment like our last. We should jump into the beautiful unknown everyday since that's where we came from and where we'll end up,' Luka said of the track.

That outlook runs throughout the album, particularly on the previously released singles 'DON'T CRY' and 'GOTTA LET YOU GO.' Both songs approach difficult emotions through dance-oriented production, allowing Luka to explore the complications of relationships without becoming consumed by their aftermath.

Co-produced by Luka and Nicci Gomez, whose credits include siiickbrain and Noah Guy, 'DON'T CRY' combines a driving rhythm with synthesizers and Luka's expressive falsetto. The singer plays every instrument on the recording, underscoring his hands-on approach to production.

'DON'T CRY is all about living in the moment,' Luka explained. 'There's no sense in wasting tears on the past or on our fleeting youth when we could just be dancing.'

On 'GOTTA LET YOU GO,' that philosophy encounters a more complicated emotional reality. The song examines a relationship that has effectively ended but continues through lingering attraction, attachment and codependency.

'Disguised under a dance beat, the lyrics in GOTTA LET YOU GO are about passion and conformity. It explores a relationship that comes to a natural end but is prolonged by desire and codependency,' Luka said.

Instead of resolving those feelings through a traditional ballad, he allows the rhythm to carry their weight. The song reflects his interest in transforming uncomfortable experiences into something listeners can physically engage with.

The shift becomes clearer when compared with INSOMNIA, released in 2025. That project drew from acoustic R&B, alternative rock, bedroom pop and electronic experimentation, emphasizing vulnerability and self-reflection.

Standout recordings included 'rush,' 'need you now' and 'aire,' the latter marking Luka's first release in Spanish. Subsequent singles began moving toward more restless, dance-oriented territory.

The hyperpop-influenced 'SAY MY NAME,' gothic dance-punk recording 'THE PARTY' and disco-inspired 'TALK TO ME' introduced a more aggressive rhythmic direction. 'TALK TO ME' also appears on f_unk, connecting that transitional period with the completed album.

Before establishing his solo identity, Luka spent eight years as lead vocalist of Weston Estate, the lo-fi alternative pop group whose touring history included sold-out performances at Brooklyn Steel in New York and the Fonda in Los Angeles.

His independent creative pursuits began well before his departure from the band. His 2019 solo single 'paradise' has accumulated more than 43 million streams, according to his representatives, while his broader solo catalog has reportedly surpassed 100 million global streams.

With f_unk, Luka brings those years of stylistic exploration into a more cohesive solo statement. From the emotional conflict of 'GOTTA LET YOU GO' to the invitation to embrace uncertainty on 'INTO THE BLUE,' the album presents a musician increasingly comfortable trusting his own instincts.
